Prime Kraaifontein industrial site auction to unlock economic opportunities

The City’s Economic Growth Directorate is gearing up for the sale auction of a prime 9,2 hectare industrial property located in the well-established and growing Wynland Industrial Park in Kraaifontein. It is envisaged that the sale of this strategically located land along the N1 will stimulate economic growth by unlocking private sector-led development opportunities and creating jobs, which will benefit surrounding areas such as Wallacedene and Bloekombos, and the broader Cape Town. 

The prime piece of strategic industrial land, Portion 9 of Paarl Farms 732, located at 35 Sandringham Street, is one of 45 City-owned properties that will be auctioned for sale and leasing on Wednesday, 2 October 2024. The auction will be both online and in person.

Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, said auctions are a key part of the City's strategy to release land for private sector development.

'Previous auctions led to successful transactions, and it's an exciting way to spark further development across the city. This sale and lease auction of the various properties represents a catalyst for substantial economic growth. No government, including the City, should be a Land Bank. The City aims to continually look for smart, innovative ways to release land and assets for new investment that maximises the value and use of our assets, ensuring they contribute to economic development.

'By unlocking land and assets for commercial and residential use, we help businesses grow, create jobs, and boost economic activities essential for growth. The money generated will be reinvested into service delivery, ensuring lasting benefits for our communities. This approach maximises under-used land, driving long-term economic sustainability,' said Alderman Vos.

The properties available for auction include a diverse range of residential, business, community and industrial uses. They are located in various areas, including Mitchells Plain, Goodwood, Somerset West, Century City, Fish Hoek, Atlantis Industrial and Constantia. Among the opportunities are 42 erven for sale, which include nine improved properties (residential houses) in Constantia, Plumstead, Gardens and Woodstock. Additionally, there are three commercial lease opportunities available in Fish Hoek and Century City.

The City auctions properties which are not required for municipal use, and the revenue generated from these auctions will be used for service delivery in Cape Town.

About the Kraaifontein property:

• It is zoned as General Industrial 2 (GI 2), allowing for a wide range of uses, including manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, offices, showrooms, workshops, and storage yards.
• It has easy access to the N1 highway, which connects Cape Town to other key cities.
• Its proximity to Cape Town International Airport and the Port of Cape Town facilitates efficient import and export of goods.
• It is also ideally positioned to support industrial growth because of its access to a skilled workforce from nearby areas like Kraaifontein, Durbanville, and surrounding agricultural regions.
